Wine Tram guide

How Does the Franschhoek Wine Tram Work?

The Franschhoek Wine Tram takes you between wine estates on a hop-on-hop-off route. Book a line and departure time, get off at the wineries you want to visit, then catch a later tram or tram bus to continue. You choose how to spend each stop, with tastings and meals paid for separately.

01Book a line and starting time

Each line visits a different group of estates. Choose the wineries you want to see, then select an available departure for that route. The guide to choosing a Wine Tram line helps narrow down the options.

If you are staying in Cape Town, you can book a day trip with return coach travel. A tram-only ticket starts at the Wine Tram terminal, so you arrange your own journey there and back.

02Arrive at your terminal

Your confirmation tells you where to check in. Arrive 10–15 minutes before departure to collect your tickets and get ready to board. Keep your line’s timetable with you; it shows the estate stops and pickups you will use during the day.

The journey uses both the rail tram and open-air tram buses. The buses take you to estates away from the railway, so you will not spend the whole route on rails.

03Hop off and explore

Step off for a tasting, settle in for lunch or spend time around the estate before continuing. You do not have to buy a tasting at every stop, and you can stay aboard past wineries you do not want to visit.

Pickups generally run about an hour apart. A longer visit can take two or more timetable slots, particularly when you add a meal. Look at the next departure before sitting down so you know how much time you have.

04Continue along your route

Return to the pickup point for the departure you want to catch. Each line travels in one direction, giving you one opportunity to get off at each estate.

Keep the final return in mind as the afternoon goes on. If you came from Cape Town by coach, your day also has a fixed coach departure. The one-day itinerary shows how to leave space for lunch and the journey back.
